With the Squid Bait Spike, you may simply cast and work the jig as you normally might. You want the jig to react quickly to maximize swimming action and then rest at horizontal on the pause again. The double whip off the bottom works equally well here. Generally you can Fish the squid hook unweighted unless you need to get particularly deep. Alternatively drift your hook under a float. When your float starts to dip under the water retrieve as normal with a strong steady wind.
As squid will almost always strike around the head and back area, insert the point into your Yakka or choice of bait, head first so that the prongs are around the mouth.
Firm baits such as Herring, Sauries, Yellowtail, Whiting work better than soft ones such as pilchards which could need the help of some bait mate or equivalent to stay on for long. A good tactic particularly of wharves is to float your spike in the area you are jigging It will then not only act as a decoy but can be easily seen.
